Agnes “Nell” (Mumford) Ewell

Nell Ewell passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family at age 89.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Orvis Watson Mumford, and Melissa Agnes Mumford of Pitt County and her 5 siblings, Mac Mumford, Daryl Mumford, Miriam Mumford Moore Smith, Ray Mumford, and Robert “Snap” Mumford.  She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Ruben Ewell and their children: Kim (Thomas) Adams of Greenville, NC, Gary (Allison) Ewell of Newport, NC, and Janet Buckner of Summerville, SC.  Nell’s pride and joy were her eight grandchildren: Ashley Evans (fiancé Brandon Collins), Kevin (Allison) Thomas, Jordan Adams, Cameron (Allen) Winston, Dakota Smith, Scott Ewell, Josh Ewell and Kaylin Barefoot.  She was also blessed with five great grandchildren: Kaleb Thomas, Breighton Thomas, Olivia Winston, “Winston” Winston and Stella Mae Thomas and many beloved nephews and nieces.    

Nell pursued her passion for education at East Carolina University.  She taught 1st and 2nd grades at Grace Christian School.  She continued to educate children as a substitute teacher in Lenoir County School until she was in her 70’s.  She was devoted to ensuring that her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren had a sound foundation in their education to allow them to be successful.  She read to them, loved to tutor them, and help them with homework.  She was a long-timemember of Immanuel Baptist Church in Kinston, NC.  In her later years, she found great joy in loving on Layla, their Jack Russell Terrier, for many years.  

A special thank you to Community Home Care and Hospice, specifically Heather, Rikki and Sandra, who were so special to our family during this time.  A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Estates in Grifton, NC on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 2:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the Lenoir County SPCA.
