Bertha (Jones) Lee

Bertha Jones Lee of Kinston went to her Heavenly home early Saturday morning, January 21, 2023 at Kitty Askins in Goldsboro. She was the third of nine children born to Jim and Lou Ellen Jones in Duplin County.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Morris Paul Lee; her son-in-law, Aaron Wade, Jr.; sister, Bernice White and brother, Lewis Jones, Sr.

She is survived by her son, Morris Earl Lee and wife Debbie and her daughter, Kay Wade all of Kinston; grandchildren, Tammy Lee Stilley and husband Jeff of Greenville, Shannon Wade, John Lee and wife Jenny and Brian Wade and wife Jennifer all of Kinston; great grandchildren, Kamryn Woodward, Shelby Lee, Jacob Stilley, Hudson Barker, Avery Wade and Addison Wade. She is also survived by sisters, Beatrice Field of Leland, Barbara Arnette and Brenda Mercer of Kinston; brothers, Larry Jones and Lula Mae of Albertson, Buddy Jones of Grifton, Lynn Jones and Diane of Kinston and numerous special nieces and nephews.

Family was always important to Bertha. She enjoyed preparing meals for Sunday lunch after church for many years. Mostly consisting of food from her and Morris’ garden. Their garden fed not only their family but neighbors and friends as well. Although everything she prepared was delicious, she was well known for her carrot cakes, apple jacks, potato salad, barbecue chicken and chicken pastry.

She was employed with Kinston Shirt Factory for 34 years and retired as a supervisor. This fit her well because she was a self taught seamstress making crafts and quilts and making clothes for her daughter and a niece.

She was a Christian woman and a member of Neuse Baptist Church in Kinston and the Young at Heart Sunday School class which she attended until her health declined.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at Garner Funeral Home and other times at her home. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2023 at Pinelawn Memorial Park conducted by her nephew Rev. Roy White.

Caregivers were her two children and her weekend sitter, Ida Miller. Special thanks to Ida.
