Doris Jewel (Turnage) Smith

Doris Jewel Turnage Smith, 89, of Kinston passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at her home. Funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Rivermont Baptist Church with Pastors Luis Miranda and John Morton officiating. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the church. Private burial will be at a later date.

Doris was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church for 65 years, where she taught Sunday School, was a dedicated choir member and participated in the Homeless Ministry.

Doris is survived by daughters, Jewel Kay Hill of the home, Connie Marie Barker and husband, Jeff of Fuquay Varina, Susan Diane Turnage of Kinston; grandson, Clifton Hill and spouse Aaron Lucier of Winterville.

Doris leaves behind, brothers, Joseph Steven Turnage and wife Virginia of Grifton, McLone Turnage of Kinston, James Turnage of Lebanon, Missouri; sisters, Ruth Maxine Cox of Winterville, Margaret Rettig of Bremerton, Washington, and Gloria Blackstock of Fayetteville. She has numerous nieces and nephews that complete a loving family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Mollie, and Joe Turnage; former husband, Frederick Howard Turnage; granddaughter, Shelley Kay Hill Cates; husband, Albert Smith; sisters, Meryl Josephine Harper, Mary Jane Brown and Cora Lee Davidson.

The family would like to send special acknowledgements to her very special Bojangles friends. Special friends, Robbie Parrish, Don Williams, Mary Oliver and along with her loving church family. Special thank you to the Hospice staff and her nieces, Debbie Rouse, and Sharin Cannon.
