Leslie “Buddy” Owen Smith, 85 of Kinston, NC passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at his home.
Born in Deep Run, NC he grew up doing things he enjoyed with family and friends. By the age of 18, Buddy joined the United States Air Force where he served his country for 20 plus years. During his career in the Air Force, he served in Vietnam and was recommended for award of Vietnam Service and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. It was also during his military career, stationed in Germany, that he met and married his wife of 64 years, Irene G. Smith, and started a family.
Upon his retirement from the USAF in 1976, he moved into the private sector to once again show his loyalty to his work, family and friends. Buddy retired after a 20 plus year career with Barnet Southern in 2003. He enjoyed all things mechanical and electrical, using his skills to help those in need with repairs.
Buddy is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irene G. Smith; his daughter, Yvonne Smith Stallings of Swansboro; his son, Robert O. Smith and wife Dawn of Clayton; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his father, Jesse O. Smith; his mother, Lydia Lee Sugg Smith and his sister, Vera Ann Smith Koonce.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 14, 2024 at Garner Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 15, 2024 at Pinelawn Memorial Park with Richard Parker officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be considered to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
