Peggy Atkinson Merritt, 81, of Dover passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at ECU Health Inpatient Hospice. Peggy was deeply religious, faithful in her prayers and devotions. For 43 years she cared for her special needs son and volunteered at the Special Olympics. She retired after 20 years of service with the Jones County School System. Peggy always had a smile on her face and made sure she put her family first. She had a humble spirit and loving heart.
Peggy is preceded in death by her father, Thel “Doc” Hooks Atkinson; mother, Virginia Blanche Sanderson Atkinson Riggs; stepfather, Ira Nelson Riggs; husband, Franklin Tate “Buddy” Merritt; sisters, Ann Whitman and Dottie Atkinson.
She is survived by her daughter, Lorrie Russell and husband, Greg of Greensboro; sons, Darren Merritt of Dover, Eric Merritt and wife Karen of Dover and Bryan Merritt of the home; grandchildren, Melissa Mandro of Beaufort, SC, Samantha Roes and husband Josh of South Prince George, VA, Daniel Merritt of Vanceboro, Allison Sizemore and husband Chris of Greensboro, Richard Wynn and fiancé Cindy of Beaufort, SC, Jessica Eddy and husband Devin of Beaufort, SC, Jamie Holschuh and husband Austin of Kinston; 14 great grandchildren; sisters, Vivian Moody of Deep Run and Janie Holloman of Dover; and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved deeply.
Visitation will be held at 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2025 at Garner Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held following the visitation with Pastor David Hildebrand officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service at Westview Cemetery.
