Ruben Ewell Obituary

Ruben Earl Ewell, born January 2, 1931, passed away on February 3, 2025, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital, reuniting with his beloved wife of 66 years, Agnes Nell Mumford Ewell.

High school sweethearts, Ruben and Nell were married on May 6, 1956, in Grifton, NC. A devoted husband and loving father, he cherished their three children, Kim, Gary, and Janet, and the joy brought by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Known for his humor, unwavering loyalty, and tireless work ethic, Ruben was the steadfast rock of his family, always ensuring their safety and happiness.

A proud U.S. Marine veteran Ruben shifted from his military service as a four year Master Sergeant, to caring for his mother, showcasing his deep sense of family commitment. After a 43-year career as Plant Manager at N.C. Products, he retired but never ceased his hard work for his family’s well-being.

He thoroughly enjoyed a good round of golf, working in his yard, spending time with his family, and savoring a cold Mountain Dew. Saturdays often found him at the mall, patiently waiting for Nell during her shopping trips, a testament to their enduring love. His friendly spirit endeared him to many, whether at their local Bojangles where he fellowshipped daily or throughout many other Kinston establishments, enjoying a good meal and a joke or two.

Ruben is preceded in death by Nell, their loyal dog Layla, his parents Herbert and Stella, and siblings Margaret, Marie, and Wayne. He is survived by his loving children, Kim (Thomas) Adams, Gary (Allison) Ewell, and Janet Buckner, as well as his cherished grandchildren, Ashley (Brandon) Collins, Kevin (Allison) Thomas, Jordan Adams, Cameron (Allen) Winston, Dakota Smith, Scott Ewell, Josh Ewell, and Kaylin Barefoot. He was blessed to have experienced the love of six great-grandchildren: Kaleb Thomas, Breighton Thomas, Valerie Collins, Olivia Winston, “Winston” Winston and Stella Mae Thomas.

Though he leaves behind a deep void, his family finds comfort in knowing that Ruben is now with his beloved Nell, watching over them with love from above. He will be missed immensely, yet his legacy of love and laughter will forever remain in their hearts.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 6, 2025 at Evergreen Memorial Estates.
